The organization of the olympics
The olympics are organized by the eighty-nine members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), whose headquarters is in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The IOC chooses the events of the olympics. An olympic sport must be played in at least twenty-five countries and at least twelve countries must enter the olympic competiton. Each sport is governed by the international federation for that sport.
Each olympics athlete must be a citizen of the country he or she represents, and every country of the world may have at least one person in each event.
The six winners of each olympics event receive diplomas. The first three winners also get medals---gold for first, silver for second and bronze for third. In most olympic events, only amateur athletes may compete in the olympics. In some sports, such as tennis and basketball, where people play professionally, the rules are adjusted.
